Aley UMW is
the group of women in Aley's congregation organized
for mission. Any woman who commits herself to the
purpose and chooses to belong is a member of Aley
UMW. We are led by an elected board, and meet as
a group for general meetings. There are also organized
subgroups, or circles, that meet separately. Many
UMW members attend both general meetings and circle
meetings, but it is not necessary to do so.
General meetings
are held five times a year, in September, November,
January, March and May. In a typical year, the September
meeting is a carry-in supper, the November meeting
includes World Thank Offering, the March meeting
includes the Call to Prayer and Self Denial Service,
and the May meeting is a banquet to which all women
of the church are invited. There are currently two
circles, morning and evening, that meet once a month
September through May. In addition, there is a weekly
Bible Study group.
In addition
to meetings, there are many opportunities to be
involved in UMW and in mission-related service.
Some of the on-going projects are described below.
New ideas are always welcome!
Thanksgiving
Baskets
UMW organizes Thanksgiving food baskets for needy
local families. Baskets include not only the ingredients
for a Thanksgiving dinner, but staple food items.
Christmas
Adopt-a-Family "Mitten Tree" project UMW
sponsors donations of Christmas gifts and food for
needy local families.
St. Paul's Lunches
Twice a year UMW organizes a lunch served at St. Paul's
United Methodist Church, a mission outreach church
located in the Huffman neighborhood in east Dayton.
Women's Retreat
UMW sponsors a biennial Women's Spiritual retreat,
open to all women of the church.
Senior Citizen's
Lunch
UMW holds an annual lunch to honor and celebrate our
congregation's senior citizens.
Funeral meals
UMW coordinates meals for congregation funerals, where
the family involved does not have a Lay Pastor.
Mission Giving
Donations made through UMW are used to support our
annual pledge to the Women's Division, and to support
specific mission projects and programs as determined
by the board each year. As a general rule, funds are
budgeted at 10% for administrative costs, 60% to missions
outside the district, and 30% to missions within the
district.
We welcome all women to participate in UMW activities.
Child care is provided for most meetings. For further
information, please call Bonnie Essex, President, or Margaret
Renz, Coordinator of Membership. Watch the church newsletter
for details on meetings and activities.
